Heroes' Square

Between Kossuth and Heroes' Square, you can find the Statue of the City Founders, inaugurated in 2001 - a work by Benedek Nagy - depicting Count Ferenc Károlyi and the shoemaker János Petrikovics from Szarvas, who were the main characters in the resettlement of the depopulated city in 1753. Heroes' Square also features The imposing building, the County Hall (1892), which shows signs of eclecticism and historicism, is the work of Ignác Alpár. On both sides of the facade are the works of Ede Kallós, the statues of Commander Szabolcs and King István, and in the ornamental courtyard are the statues of former prime ministers Count Menyhért Lónyay (1871-72) and Miklós Kálllay (1942-44). The park in front of the County Hall is dominated by the World War I monument, designed by Zsigmond Kisfaludy Stróbl in 1928. Its main figure is the hero fighting the dragon, the two flanking groups: the start of the battle and the end. It can be seen from Gellert Hill in Budapest. The dragon is a German modification of the Nyíregyház statue.
